Integrative Oncology

Overview

Integrative oncology can be defined as the rational, evidence based combination of conventional therapy with complementary interventions into an individualized therapeutic regimen that addresses the whole person living with or beyond cancer. The tenants of integrative oncology include optimizing the health of the body, mind and spirit, toward the goals of cancer prevention, optimizing outcome and tolerance of conventional treatment of cancer, as well as improving the quality of life and longevity of cancer survivors.

Although conventional medical approaches offer crucial interventions such as surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer, it is understood that aspects of lifestyle such as nutrition, exercise, stress reduction and spirituality may have meaningful benefits in cancer prevention and outcomes.

The physicians of Radiation Oncology Consultants are educated in many aspects of an integrated oncology, and can offer specific advice about nutrition, supplements, and healthy lifestyle that may contribute to improved outcomes, and quality of life during and after treatment. Radiation Oncology Consultants provide a patient-centered, holistic approach to the care of their patients. Dr. Arica Hirsch, a partner in the practice, is a certified Fellow in Integrative Medicine, having completed the 2-year Program in Integrative Medicine fellowship at the University of Arizona under the directorship of Dr. Andrew Weil.
